What Causes Learning Disabilities - Case Study 3

Amanda is a 12 year old who has become withdrawn at school and at home. Although she has always been reserved and shy, she no longer spends time with the few friends she had and instead sits in front of the television when she is not forced to be at school. Her teachers have confirmed she is more than a year behind in both math and reading. The school concludes that Amanda lacks the intelligence needed to keep pace with her peers but her parents disagree. They protest that Amanda has always excelled in her learning at home no matter what the subject. When she was finally tested, her IQ was found to be in the gifted range. The reason she has fallen behind in comparison to her peers who test below her IQ level is that she has difficulty making sense out of written symbols. Amanda’s resulting frustration has left her depressed and discouraged which accounts for her withdrawn behavior.
