What Causes Learning Disabilities - Case Study 2

Robert is a 7 year old boy who can’t sit still. He’s a modern day “Fidgity Philip”. No matter what sound is heard in the classroom, Robert has to investigate it. A door closes next door, Robert gets up to look out and see who is walking down the hall. Someone sneezes, he turns to see who it is. A bird chirps, he wants to find the bird. No sounds at all. He sharpens his pencil. Robert feels compelled to be in constant motion. Up down. Up down. After he sharpens his pencil, he asks is he can sharpen his neighbor’s pencil. All this activity prevents him from focusing on his work and he falls behind as a result. Robert’s teacher is frustrated because she can’t get him to sit still which distracts the other students. But Robert is even more frustrated than his teacher. He has no ability to ignore distractions. It’s as if someone else is turning his head and screaming “Look!” all day long. It’s irritating to those around Robert but it is especially exhausting to Robert himself. The only time sights and sounds aren’t slapping him in the face are when he’s sleeping and even that isn’t always forthcoming.
