Independent Study

The benefit of Independent Study is that students can take their courses from anywhere in the world on their own schedule and receive academic credit. Courses have flexible beginning and ending dates to accommodate for students who have other demands on their time including work, vacations, acting schedules, sports schedules, etc.

The student has classes with a credentialed teacher for a minimum of six hours a week at The Learning Center or at the student's location. He/she studies during the rest of the week on his/her own to complete one semester of a 7th–12th grade course in as few as four weeks depending on the intensity of his/her learning schedule. Independent Study is offered year-around.

Our Independent Study courses can be as independent as the student needs or desires with The Learning Center providing between six to twenty hours of instruction a week. A student’s motivation to learn plays a big part in the number of hours of instruction that may be necessary each week. Students are given assignments according to grade standards and are expected to complete the work assigned to them. Our program accounts for every learning style and accommodates each student’s learning needs. In addition, students are tested regularly to make certain that they are learning the material for each course. Students will receive course credit for the courses they take and pass.

The Learning Center will work together with the parents and the student to set up a schedule in order to meet the student’s needs. The minimum course time is six hours a week of instruction for four weeks to complete one course. This requires a student to study full-time on his or her own to learn the course material.

Independent Study courses that are available for credit include:
• Algebra I & II, Geometry, Math Analysis, Trigonometry & Calculus,
• US History I & II, World History,
• English 7th-12th grade,
• Fine Arts,
• Biology, Earth Sciences, Physics, Chemistry, and
• Foreign Languages including Spanish, French, Italian, Chinese, Japanese, and German.
All independent study courses are offered in one-on-one sessions with a credentialed or master level teacher. They may be provided through the following:
• Over the Internet through Skype from anywhere in the world with paper tests and written reports sent to The Learning Center via email or fax to be graded;
• With a teacher who comes to your home in Los Angeles, California; or
• At The Learning Center’s Campus in Encino, California.

Often multiple independent study courses can be planned to be taken over the summer as summer school. These summer classes can advance a student allowing them to meet or exceed their grade level by the time traditional school begins. Our high school summer program can be tailored for any subject that the student requires and can be organized so that their summer school schedule fits within other summer plans.
